On October 21, 1988 Bluefields and areas of Nicaragua Caribbean Coast, was severely attacked by the winds of up to 321 K.P.H.

The city was completely devastated by the hurricane, leaving thousands of people homeless, without jobs, and the destruction of most of the machinery, services, and infrastructure of the city.

Hurricane Joan also destroyed more than 250 thousand hectares of forest, displaced the wild life, and decimated the fishing grounds; consequently, it affected the productivity and living conditions of the inhabitants.

Today the architecture of this city reflects their racial mixture and their colored past, British colonial mixture, cabins from the Antilles and plantations in the style of New Orleans.
